I read a headline today over at one of my premier nerd sites “Science Daily” that said “Aerobic Exercise Trumps Resistance Training for Weight and Fat Loss.” I thought “Really, well I have to see what this is about.”
According to Science Daily…
“Balancing time commitments against health benefits, our study suggests that aerobic exercise is the best option for reducing fat mass and body mass,” said Cris A. Slentz, PhD, a Duke exercise physiologist and study co-author. “It’s not that resistance training isn’t good for you; it’s just not very good at burning fat.”
Well, is this right?
I got my hands on the complete research paper this article was based on and I ripped it apart, end to end, cover to cover. I got so into it that I ended up doing a Powerpoint video of me reviewing the article. The Powerpoint is 31 minutes!
I found the article quite interesting obviously. So which is better? Weights only, cardio only or a combination of cardio and weights? Well, the headline of my post here says it all but if you want to see exactly why I say what I say even though the authors disagree with me then check out the video and enjoy.
As we see sometimes peer reviews are not the be all to end all. Looks like they missed it on this one.
Hi Warren – it appears their data was right but their comments throughout, tilt overall and conclusion ended up, in my opinion, to be biased in favor of cardio and against weight-training.
