1. Certain Foods Linked to Long-term Weight Gain – National Institutes of Health
A new study suggests that the types of food you choose, not just calories, are important for avoiding age-related weight gain… http://tinyurl.com/67zx3u9
Why I like: Re-enforces the fact that garbage in = garbage retained (instead of the popular garbage out).
2. Can Interval Training Give Your Workouts a Boost?
How interval training can give your workouts a boost, from the experts at UC Berkeley School of Public Health. http://tinyurl.com/6kgmjox
Why I like: Long-slow cardio can be fine for many but some variety is good from time to time and it’s a fact that interval training can boost cals burned and add variety.
3. Omega‑3 Fatty Acids May Reduce Inflammation and Anxiety in Healthy Young Adults
Study suggests that omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil reduce inflammation and anxiety in healthy young adults. http://tinyurl.com/5tljz87
Why I like: Been a proponent of omega-3 fats for a couple decades now. We don’t consume enough and we overconsume omega-6 and others.
4. Pumping Iron Helps Smokers Quit Without Weight Gain: Study
Would-be ex-smokers may want to try weight lifting to help them kick the habit for good, a new study suggests. http://tinyurl.com/6asmv28
Why I like: It’s not the first time I’ve read this. RT is overlooked too much in favor of cardio. Nice to see RT getting its due in this arena too.
5. More Muscle Mass Knocks Out Insulin Resistance and Prediabetes
Having more muscle mass can protect against insulin resistance and prediabetes, no matter overall body size, researchers said…. http://tinyurl.com/6dt72ms
Why I like: I’ve been debunking popular jargon and dogma in the weight-loss field for a decade or more now. RT used to be all but ignored but the fact remains – you can walk until your heart’s content but you can never, ever duplicate the additional benefits of RT unless you do RT. This is just one more benefit.
6. Increased Libido One Sexual Benefit of Weight Loss
Sexual function improved significantly and quickly in obese men with type 2 diabetes after weight loss with reduced-calorie diets, results of a small Australian clinical study showed. http://tinyurl.com/4xmnha9
Why I like: Contrary to popular belief not all men over 35 are a bunch of horn dogs. Quite the opposite is often the case but they sit silently afraid to talk about it or bring it up with anyone. They suffer. If they’re in a relationship their wife or partner suffers. Needs to be addressed more often.
7. Spicy Food May Boost Metabolism
Spicing up dinner may have metabolic benefits, particularly when it comes to insulin and triglyceride levels, a small study showed. http://tinyurl.com/6ekl482
Why I like: Not the first time I’ve heard this. Supportive of other research on the same subject. But keep in mind that adding turmeric to a donut isn’t going to work folks. Stay real about the overall benefits of eating spicy foods. What you add the spices TOO is far more important than the spice itself.
