Jack Lalanne died on Sunday, at the age of 96.
I literally said outloud “Awe, damn it” as soon as I heard the news.
I know about everyone above the age of 40 who’s involved in fitness will have something positive to say about Jack Lalanne.
Let me just say with reverence what I thought of him. About a decade ago I had 4-5 opportunities to meet Arnold Schwarzenneger in person, shake hands, get a pic with him in one of the “Arnold Classic Bodybuilding Show” events in Columbus OH. I passed each time. I like the guy. Amazing man. Amazing bodybuilder. Just didn’t care to do a cattle call meet and greet with him.
About five years ago I was in Vegas at a biz convention and Jack Lalanne spoke. The room had about 800 people in it. I waited for the room to clear completely and since Jack was the last speaker I patiently waited for the people on stage to clear off a bit and for the crowd to die down. Jack stayed on stage talking to a few people – probably show producers etc.
Well I finally got the guts and actually walked up on stage, stood back 30 feet while he was still talking to someone – didn’t want to alarm anyone. I wanted to shake this man’s hand.
After about 30 secs of me on stage Jack looked over, pointed at me and said “Now this young man knows what I’m talking about.” Then I slowly walked over to him with a big smile on my face and gushed appropriately shaking his hand.
So I passed on Arnold (an idol of mine in certain ways) and made damn sure I shook Jack’s hand.
I know he had to die sometime but dang it – ya, he’ll be missed.
Here’s an article on Yahoo regarding his passing.
